Two post towns.
One old road.

The Nakasendō linked Kyoto and Edo through Japan’s mountains. Magome and Tsumago were two of its sixty-nine post towns, places where travelers ate, rested and changed horses before continuing east or west.

This family version keeps the walking gentle enough to leave room for chestnut sweets, little museums, baths, dinner at the inn and the almost empty streets after the day visitors leave.

歩くことで出会える、日本の美しさ。

Discovering the beauty of Japan by walking.

Walk east, toward Edo.

The route climbs from Magome to 790 m at Magome Pass, then descends through forest and waterfalls to Tsumago. Day 3 continues to Nagiso Station.

Geographic route overview from Magome through Magome Pass and Tsumago to Nagiso Station
Places are positioned from geographic coordinates; the connecting line is a planning overview, not a turn-by-turn track. Carry an offline trail map and check current local notices.

A slow journey, in order.

  1. 01
    Tokyo → Magome

Arrive before the village goes quiet.

Take the Tōkaidō Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Nagoya, then the JR Chūō Line to Nakatsugawa and the local bus to Magome. Do not anchor the day to these sample durations: trains and buses change, and the bus is the connection to protect.

After lunch, walk the sloping stone street, visit the Tōson Memorial Museum, browse ceramics, textiles and local food, and try 栗きんとん (kuri-kinton, chestnut sweet). Sleep at Tajimaya, a small inn on the post-town road with dinner and breakfast plans available on its official site.

  2. 02
    Magome → Tsumago

    Eight kilometers through time.

About 8 km / 5 mi · roughly 2½–3½ hours of walking, before long stops. The trail climbs to Magome Pass and then descends past O-daki and Me-daki waterfalls and the Ichikokutochi rest house.

Pause for tea, carry water and a backup snack, then plan a late lunch in Tsumago rather than relying on a full meal midway. Explore Honjin, Waki-Honjin Okuya and the preserved Terashita townscape. Sleep at Onyado Daikichi, just beyond the busiest part of the village.

  3. 03
    Tsumago → Nagiso → Tokyo

    Finish at 南木曽駅.

About 3.7 km / 2.3 mi · roughly 1–1¼ hours walking. Follow the old road from Tsumago to Nagiso Station. If anyone wants to skip this last walk, use the local bus or a taxi; confirm the current departure before leaving the inn.

From Nagiso, travel to Nagoya on the JR Chūō Line, then take the Tōkaidō Shinkansen to Tokyo Station. Some Limited Express Shinano trains stop at Nagiso and some do not, so the date-specific search may route you through Nakatsugawa. The tourism association’s best-case Nagiso–Tokyo estimate is about 2 hr 50 min.

Twilight in the post towns.

The short mileage is deliberate. Both towns reward an unhurried afternoon, while the evening belongs to dinner, a bath and quiet streets.

Stone slope & mountain views

  • Tōson Memorial Museum at the former honjin site
  • Craft and souvenir shops along the stone street
  • Chestnut sweets, goheimochi, soba and coffee
  • Upper viewpoint and a slow 夕暮れ散歩 — sunset walk

Magome is the livelier of the two. Many shops keep daytime hours, so browse before check-in rather than saving it for after dinner.

Wooden streets & living history

  • Honjin and Waki-Honjin Okuya
  • Nagiso Town Museum and preservation story
  • Small shops for wagashi, crafts and 御宿場印 post-town stamps
  • Terashita’s preserved houses and evening lanes

Tsumago feels more residential and historically preserved. Visit the cultural buildings while they are open, then enjoy how still the village becomes.

Pleasures along the way.

A full lunch is not guaranteed between the villages. Breakfast, trail tea, a backup snack and a later lunch in Tsumago make the day flexible.

What to taste

Tea, miso, chestnut.

五平餅 goheimochi — grilled rice with a sweet-savory glaze.
蕎麦 soba — a reliable Kiso lunch.
栗きんとん kuri-kinton — Nakatsugawa’s chestnut confection.
おやき oyaki — a stuffed bun found around Nagano.

Tea houses and restaurants can close irregularly or sell out. Carry water and a compact snack even when you plan to buy lunch.

Stay on the old road.

Tajimaya · 但馬屋

A modest Magome minshuku with an old irori and two-meal plans described on its official site. Treat it as a traditional inn stay, not an onsen resort.

Onyado Daikichi · 御宿大吉

A five-room inn in Tsumago. Its official details list a lockable 家族風呂 (kazoku-buro, family bath) and traditional meals.

お風呂 is not the same as 温泉.

Ofuro means a Japanese bath. Onsen means naturally sourced mineral hot-spring water. Neither stay should be presented as a natural onsen unless the inn itself confirms that for your dates. Ask about bath hours and private-use arrangements when booking.

Cool air, color, green.

Peak color and weather vary each year. Reserve the small yado early, then check the forecast and local trail notices near departure.

第一候補 · First choice

Late October–early November

紅葉 — kōyō

Cooler walking weather, turning maples and dark timber streets. The exact foliage window moves from year to year.

Second choice

Late April–May

新緑 — shinryoku

Fresh green leaves and mild temperatures. Avoid Golden Week, roughly April 29–May 5, when transport and lodging demand rise sharply.

Build the schedule around the buses.

Outbound

Tokyo → Magome

Tokyo Station → Nagoya Station → Nakatsugawa Station → Magome. Search the whole trip for the actual date, then choose a Shinkansen that leaves margin before the Nakatsugawa bus.

Return

Nagiso → Tokyo

Nagiso Station → Nagoya Station → Tokyo Station. A Limited Express Shinano may be convenient, but not every service stops at Nagiso; a local connection through Nakatsugawa is normal.
